DIY With Pallets

I've been collecting ideas of how to re-purpose pallets in our home ever since I saw the way the West Elm store in Portland incorporated them into a display. My sister actually recreated her own version in her living room:

Cute, right? Well, ever since I've been wanting to find a way to use them in my home and wanted to share a few of my favorite ideas. If you have any other ideas, please let me know!

I like this simple shelving. Not sure if something like this would fit in our small home, but perhaps.

A pallet accent wall! We've seen something similar at one of our favorite local restaurants.

I think many of you have probably seen this pallet headboard image before. I just love it- fits our style perfectly.

And, last but not least these simple wall shelves. I actually think I might be able to make these!

Portland Bazaar Favorites

I was up in Portland for a short visit this weekend for my nephews birthday party and after the festivities my sister and I popped on over to the Portland Bazaar. Grace Bonney (Design*Sponge), Greg Hennes (Antler and Co.) and Matt Pierce (Wood & Faulk) teamed up to create this holiday fair that celebrated the handmade work being produced in Portland.

My goodness, what a treat! There were so many amazing vendors, artists and designers. We didn't stay long as we had nephew in tow, but I loved everything I saw. Here are a few of my favorite finds:

Between Wind & Water
I am in love with these gorgeous bags and clutches. Seriously, go check them out.

Anna Mara Flowers
I literally stopped in my tracks when I saw the staghorn fern hanging from a wood post. One of the most beautiful indoor plants I have seen. My iPhone pic doesn't do it justice. We're still looking for the right place to hang it.

Woonwinkel
Woonwinkel is a shop focused on well made, handcrafted furnishings for the home.The pieces that caught my eye were the small neoprene knit bowls. I would love a large one to put magazines or blankets in. A small one would be perfect for a bedside table too.

There were so, so many more things I wanted to see. If this event is put on again and you are in the area I highly recommend it!

Pinterest Goodies

One of my favorite things to pin on Pinterest are recipes. I love to cook and am always trying something new. I thought it'd be fun to give a review of sorts for some of the recent recipes I've tried that were found via pinterest. Perhaps you've seen some of the same and this will be helpful. :)

Baked Zucchini Sticks and Sweet Onion Dip

This recipe takes a bit of time, but is so worth it. The combination of salty and crunchy of the zuchinni with the sweetness of the dip is incredible. The only downside is the amount of mayonnaise (I hate mayo), but you really don't taste it too much.

Hot Spinach and Artichoke Dip

This was so super easy and tasted amazing. This would be great for a party or a light snack. Jesse and I frequent McMenamins specifically for their spinach and artichoke dip and I have a feeling we won't be going there as often. Well, maybe for the tots and hummus...

Sweet Potato Salad

The main reason I tried this recipe was because I had some left over sweet potatoes (already peeled and chopped) I had purchased for a Thanksgiving recipe that needed to be used. Man oh man, is it good! I actually think this would be a great side dish for a holiday meal if your going for a non-traditional menu. It's surprisingly light, but packed with flavor. Definitely making this again.

A Tasty Pumpkin Treat

I'm so excited to have a few days off work to spend with family and friends! We're staying in town for Thanksgiving since both of our families are here. Tonight I'm making these tasty pumpkin scones. They are actually already in the oven baking. Yum! I can't wait to try one.

Thinking Positive

I have a tendency to let things overwhelm me. This probably has a lot to do with the fact that I over-think, over-analyze and dwell on things positive and/or negative (unfortunately usually more of the negative). Sometimes I get so caught up in what is bothering me that I don't take care of myself and find ways to overcome the negative.

Lately, I've been trying really hard to focus on only the positive and not let the negative get me down. This includes not venting to husband every night, which is hard for me not to do! Anyway, I'm trying really hard and here are a few of the things that have helped me stay positive:

Clean and reorganize my space at work. I don't have a private office, but I have about the equivalent of 2 desks. I removed all the clutter, put up some pictures and brought a vase of magenta peonies to brighten the mood. It worked!
Waking up early enough in the morning to enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the news or catch up on all you lovely bloggers. When I have time to enjoy my morning at home and not be rushed, my whole day is off to a better start.
Listen to music. I've started listening to music more at work and at home. At work it helps me focus on my tasks and not get distracted by all the noise around me. At home I'm able to unwind and relax much more when there are some good tunes playing in the background.

What do you do to stay positive and not dwell on the negative? I'd love to add to this list if you have any tips! :)

Mini Vaca in Seaside

Last week Jesse and I took a mini vacation to the lovely Oregon coast town of Seaside. It was such a treat since our schedules are so opposite right now and we rarely get the opportunity to get out of town to relax. We got there Sunday and my sister's family arrived on Monday. The weather was absolutely perfect.

The first day we spent in Seaside, on the beach and exploring the town and also checked out Cannon Beach. Tuesday we went up to Astoria. Oh my goodness! I had no idea how cute Astoria is. Tons of great shops, cafes and history galore. I would definitely go back in a heart beat.

We had the best time. Now I'm just trying to figure out how we can do this more often!

Lately

To start the week off I thought I'd share a few things that make me happy this October.

1. I got a promotion! The best part, I totally didn't see it coming.

2. Today is my 3 month anniversary. Can't believe it's only been 3 months!

3. We're off to spend a few days in Seaside, OR. I'm so unbelievably excited to get out of town for a few days and relax. We never get to do this, so it's definitely a treat. (I'll hopefully have lots of great photos to share when I get back!)

4. My sister and her family are joining us at the beach! This lil man is getting so much fun to play with. He's talking so much... I love hearing him say, 'auntie'!

5. Our pups. They've been a lot to handle lately, but I'm so grateful they're ours and would do anything for them. Trying to raise and train two pups from the same litter is not easy, but I wouldn't change a thing.

My New Do

I've had my new do for a few weeks now, I've just been waiting to get some good photos so I could share with you. Turns out, I'm not good at taking pictures of myself or having Jesse take some of me. So... my laptop camera will have to do, for now anyway.

I'm a huge fan of the ombre dyed hair look and have wanted to try it since the beginning of summer. However, being that I was getting married mid-July, I wanted to wait til after the big day. Afterall, I'd been growing my hair for quite some time and hadn't colored it in years. It was definitely time for a little change.

The thing I love so much about the ombre look is that it's perfect for an undone look and that's what I do best (or so I think). Here are a few of my hair inspirations:

DIY Chevron Curtains

I don't know about you, but our house always seems like a work in progress. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that we can't afford to just go out and buy everything we'd want for our home, but in a way I kind of like it. It forces me to be more creative with what we have and gives me excuses for all sorts of DIY projects.

The one room that we've been working on since the wedding is our living room. I want this room to be cozier and more inviting. It's pretty small so there are only so many ways we can arrange furniture. I've grown quite fond of chevron stripes and have been wanting to make my own chevron rug. However, having two rowdy pups doesn't really lend itself well to a rug with white in it or even one that I care about (they tend to eat any carpet/rug they can, given the opportunity).

So instead I decided to take two of our four white curtain panels and paint a chevron pattern on them. Jesse and I decided on mustard yellow. This color complements the rest of our room well and stands out just enough to make a subtle statement.

Here's how we did it:

Jesse used graph poster board to cut a stencil.

We lined up the stencil on the panel. *The tape didn't really help and we stopped using it after we moved the stencil down.

We used sponges to apply the paint. This gave it a sort of weathered look. I wasn't planning to do it this way, but it actually looks really cool.

We ran out of paint after the first panel and had to go get more. If you try something like this, I would definitely recommend getting more paint than you think you'll need. It goes really fast!

Injured Pup

I had a fun DIY project that I finished up this weekend I had planned to share with you today, but our pup Frank had an injury yesterday and so instead I'm going to snuggle him and make sure he doesn't get too rowdy.

Our Wedding: Part 3

Now on to all the reception fun! Like I mentioned earlier, Jesse and I really wanted a laid back and fun atmosphere for the day. We literally took a completely empty field and turned it into the most beautiful setting for the reception. A few things that I insisted on were: string lights, simple table decor, fruit + soda crates and sparklers for our exit. There was really only one thing that Jesse insisted on and that was the grass dance floor. At first I completely disagreed, but soon realized I should just trust him. And, so glad I did! People loved it.

Our food was also a huge hit. Jesse and I knew right away that we wanted Mazzi to cater with his pizza oven. It was the perfect fit for us (we LOVE pizza) and complemented the casual atmosphere perfectly. Not to mention Mazzi was a total blast to work with. Every time we met with him pre-wedding to discuss details I was beaming for hours.

In addition to the pizza, we served appetizers prepared by our mothers. Caprese skewers, veggie cups, fresh fruit, cheese and crackers. We really couldn't have done it all without them.

We decided early on not to do a formal cake cutting, so cupcakes were an easy choice for us. The Sassy Cupcake is a local cupcake shop run by the sweetest woman, Melissa. She, too, was incredible to work with! I really do think we had the very best vendors.

People always tell you that you're going to be too busy to eat at our reception and I definitely did not believe them. We had amazing food! Why would I want to pass that up? But, alas, Jesse and I were buzzing all over the place greeting as many guests as we could. I think I had just one bite of pizza and maybe a cupcake all night!

We ended the night with toasts, dancing and the perfect sparkler send off! This was an incredible day shared with the most amazing friends and family a couple could ask for.

Our Wedding: Part 2

When you don't attend a church it can be somewhat difficult to find someone to officiate your wedding. Afterall, it is your wedding. An extremely special day and Jesse and I didn't want to just ask a random pastor to do the ceremony for us. We wanted it to feel intimate and personal and decided that Jesse's dad, Mike, would be perfect. I still remember when we asked him. Jesse didn't beat around the bush and just asked him outright. Mike was so sweet about it and was almost speechless.

It couldn't have turned out better. Mike talked for just a few minutes and then we said our vows. I insisted that Jesse and I write our own vows and I'm so glad we did. They were personal and unique to us, which is how I think they should be. And, even though we had rehearsed our vows, saying them to one another on our wedding day was absolutely amazing.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this earlier, but our wedding photographer was Dmitri of Monovita. If you hadn't noticed, he's amazing! :)

Our Wedding: Part 1

We've had our wedding photos for just a couple weeks and I've been waiting to share them with you until our family had a chance to see them. Today I'll just start with getting ready and everything before the ceremony.

From the moment we started planning our wedding, Jesse and I knew we wanted a fun, casual wedding celebration. I'd like to think we did a pretty good job of making it fun for everyone and staying true to our style.

Berry Picking!

I went strawberry picking back in June with Renee and Jesse's little cousin Jillian and had such a good time! I picked berries for a couple weeks during the summer when I was younger, but hadn't since so I couldn't wait to do it again. Jesse and I decided to give away strawberry jam as our wedding favor and this was the first step.

The next morning I went over to Renee's so we could make the jam. I was so so so excited to make jam, but it wasn't exactly what I expected. It took us like 5 hours, but it could have something to do with the fact that we had so many little jars to fill. And, everything had to be so hot, my fingertips were toasted by the time we were done!

Overall, it was worth it. The jars were perfect and we tried some of the extra jam and I'll admit homemade is mucho better than store bought!

Bridal Shower (part 2 and 2 months late)

I'm not quite sure what happened here and why I it's been so long since I posted, but here we are. Nearly a month after my wedding and I'm just now posting the remaining photos from my bridal shower. Oh dear. Well, here they are! It was indeed a lovely shower and my sister did an amazing job putting everything together. Love you sis!

Fireflies

Last week my fiance, Jesse, traveled to the great state of Iowa with the University of Oregon track and field team for the NCAA Track and Field Finals. He went as the team videographer, capturing all the great moments on film.

When I found out he was going on the trip, I was so excited. First, because I am so proud of him for being able to do what he loves and being so darn good at it. Second, because I used to live in Iowa and regardless of how blah it is there I will always have good memories. One of my favorite memories of Iowa is catching fireflies with my brother and sister at night in the summers. We would have so much fun running around the neighborhood after the cute little bugs and carefully put them in a jar once they were caught.

As Jesse was preparing for his trip I joked, 'bring me back some fireflies'! I was so bummed when he told me that he didn't even see any. Then, he gave me this shirt:

Bridal Shower (part 1)

This weekend my sister threw me the most wonderful bridal shower! It was cooking themed, so guests were asked to share their favorite recipe with me. Wedding Goodness

No excuses for my absence as of late other than lots of work and wedding projects mixed with weekend adventures and relaxing when I can. We've been spending our weekends out at the wedding location cleaning up and getting the area prepped. You may remember that we have decided to get married on private property. The family just recently moved there and so there's lots to do to get it cleaned up and ready for our wedding. Lots of fun, but also lots of work. The other wedding projects I've been working on are the invites, designing the tablescapes, etching for the favors and lots of other little details. Here are some photos!

Loft Envy

I am so excited to share with you my friends gorgeous LA loft today. It's located in the garment district of Los Angeles with great views of the city. I especially love the open floor plan and high ceilings. I think it's so great that they have done so much to transform the space and make it truly theirs. That can definitely be a challenge when renting. The loft is so amazing that it is featured on Apartment Therapy today! So cool! Here are a few photos, but be sure to check out the whole spread.

Levi's Curve ID

Levi's Curve ID denim is all about shape, not size. Levi's looked at 3D body scan images from women all around the world and created a formula for the best possible fit for all body types. Check out this video from the debut event that took place last September in San Francisco to learn more about these amazing jeans!

I have the hardest time finding jeans that fit well so this concept definitely interested me. I finally got the chance to check them out this weekend while I was in Portland and so glad I did! I scored a pair of slight curve dark skinny jeans that I just love. I'll definitely be back for more.

Nike Clash of the Champions

Last night I attended the Nike Clash of the Champions tennis event at Matthew Knight Arena with my soon to be MIL. It was such an amazing event!

The four players at the exhibition were Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka. After they were all announced, I noticed everyone yelling and standing up to see someone. At first I thought it was Serena Williams since she was originally scheduled to be there. Instead it was John McEnroe a tennis champ from the late seventies, early eighties! How cool?!

There was a women's match, mixed doubles and a men's match. The cool thing about it being an exhibition was all the interaction between the athletes and the crowd. They genuinely appeared to be enjoying themselves and were so fun to watch. During the mixed match the athletes wore mics so we could hear them better, while John McEnroe was the umpire and Joey Harrington and Dennis Dixon were line judges. They gave us a great show and at the end of the night we even got to see Uncle Phil. What a great night!

While watching the local news this evening, I caught the end of a segment on 'dressing for success'. The woman being interviewed and giving advice said something like, 'the only polished-looking tops are long sleeve'. Really?! She was styling the model in pant suits and super conservative (and outdated) outfits. I couldn't help but get a little frustrated when she was saying that dressing like that would get you a job or mean that people would take you seriously. Not that she is completely wrong, but there is so much more to consider. Anyway...

It got me thinking so I quickly scanned my favorite online shops and found some adorable pieces and looks that are professional and in style.

Wow! Can you tell I like bright colors? Just for the record, I don't necessarily think that shorts are a professional workplace look, but I love the top. Where do you shop for work clothes?

I love music. Music has the ability to brighten my day, remind me of a special moment or just give me something to sing and dance to. I don't like just one style of music, but lots. It depends on each individual artist and how they're music makes me feel.

That being said, I have a new favorite I'm so excited to share with you! Have you heard of the band Mumford and Sons? They are a band of four guys from London that have a mix of folk, bluegrass and indie rock sound. Ever since I discovered them I've been listening nonstop. Here is one of my favorite songs, Little Lion Man.

Auntie Adventures

This weekend I got to spend some time with my sisters family. I love every second I'm with them. We went to OMSI, checked out downtown Portland and had a relaxing evening at home. A little break from my small town was just what I needed!

I don't believe I shared photos of my nephew, Jack, before so this is a first. Brace yourself cause he's adorable. Like, break your heart adorable.

He brought me a book and we read it about 5 times before mommy called it quits and swooped him off for bed. I was lucky enough to get to read it to him another 5 times this morning. :)

I am so ready for this weekend! Every year, a group of our friends head out to Central Oregon around Valentine's Day for a weekend full of crazy times that remind us of our college years. The annual getaway is called Valen-friends.

Spending a few days away from home is always so nice, especially with friends. And, Central Oregon happens to be one of my favorite places. It's definitely going to be a good time!

I LOVE to cook. And, I've been trying to branch out and try new recipes more often. I was helping out with dessert for Christmas dinner and decided to go a little non traditional. When I spotted this beautiful cake I HAD to try it! I was a little nervous how it would turn out since I didn't test the recipe before serving it to everyone, but this cake did not disappoint. It was so incredibly delicious, you must try it!

Guinness Chocolate Cake

Cake Ingredients

250 g (1 c. and 2 tbsp) unsalted butter
250 ml (1 c.) Guinness
75 g Dutch process cocoa ( 3/4 c.), sifted
275 g (2 + 1/4 c.) all purpose flour, sifted
2 tsp. baking soda
400 g (2 c.) sugar
2 medium eggs
150 ml (2/3 c.) sour cream
1 tbsp. good quality vanilla extract

Frosting Ingredients

300 g (1 + 1/3 cup) cream cheese
150 g (1+1/2 c.) powdered sugar, sifted
150 ml (2/3 c.) cream, whipped

Instructions

Preheat oven to 180C/350F.

1. Add butter, cocoa and Guinness to a saucepan. Warm over a medium heat and stir until melted. Set aside for 5 to 10 minutes to cool slightly.

2. Add flour, baking soda and sugar to a large mixing bowl and mix together well. Pour in the Guinness/cocoa/butter mixture, lightly combine, add the vanilla, eggs and sour cream and beat everything together until well combined. The batter should be thick and dark chocolate in color.

3. Pour into a greased and lined 10″ angel food pan (or another straight-sided tube pan) and cook in the oven for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean from the centre of the cake.*Note: This cake is very moist inside, so use your judgment regarding the skewer test. Do not leave in the oven until the cake has totally dried out — cook long enough so there is no uncooked cake on the skewer but there may be a few moist crumbs sticking to it after an hour of cooking.

4. Leave to cool for 10 to 15 minutes before removing from the cake tin and placing on a wire wrack to cool completely.

Frosting Instructions

1. Place the cream cheese into the bowl of a mixer and beat on a low-medium speed using a whisk attachment (I find a paddle attachment tends to over-beat the cheese). Whisk until the cheese is smooth and there are no big lumps remaining.

2. Gradually, using a large spoon, add in the sifted powdered sugar and beat gently to combine. After 2 to 3 minutes, stop the machine, scrape any excess frosting from the sides of the bowl and beat on medium speed until lump free.

3. Remove bowl from mixer and gently fold in the whipped cream, mixing to fully combine.

4. Place cooled cake on a cake stand and add the frosting, spreading out just to the edge without going over the side (never go over the sides of the cake) until the cake resembles a pint of the creamy black stuff! The idea is to capture the essence and simplicity of a pint of Guinness. Sláinte!

Oh my it's been a long time! I almost can't believe it was November last time I wrote. I've sort of been away on purpose, but I've kept up with all of you, I promise! Here's a little update.

I started a new job in December! I'm no longer working from home on my couch, which was quite nice, but I've been waiting for the right opportunity and it couldn't have come at a better time. This generally means that when I come home in the evening I sort of shut my brain off and don't want to think. I like to cook and spend time with my pups, hence the lack of writing.

Planning our wedding. Little by little we're figuring everything out, but it's not quite as easy as I imagined it would be. I always thought I knew what I wanted and that it would be so simple once I was engaged. Not so! There are so many ideas and things that I want to do, that it's a lot harder when it comes down to making a final decision. But, all in all I'm the happiest girl and can't wait for our wedding day. It's going to be amazing and I'll share some details soon.

I hope you are all having a wonderful 2011! I am hoping to write more often and hope you all stay with me as I bring this little blog back to life!

i'm so excited to introduce you to my new loves, berkeley and francisco (berk and frank). they are australian shepherd puppies and the cutest thing ever. jesse's family has 2 australian shepherds and we'd been asking if they would breed the female, gracie for awhile. it all worked out and about 7 weeks ago they arrived. we only intended on keeping one, but soon realized that 2 would be so much better.

we brought them home last friday. our hands are full, but we are so happy with our new pups.

I have the most adorable artist to share with you. Kelli Murray is the head designer at Jedidiah clothing company and also an amazing painter and illustrator (not to mention she has great style). I stumbled on her wedding a few days ago while browsing Green Wedding Shoes. If her wedding isn't enough to awe you, her artwork certainly will. I think the prints would make great gifts!

I remember years ago when I lived with my sister we would always be finding ways to create something that we saw in a store or magazine for our little apartment. I specifically remember making curtains, wall decorations and jewelry. Not everything turned out the best, but we had a great time and probably saved a penny or two as well.

These days I'm often scouring blogs for new projects and ideas. More often than not I will see something, shriek with excitement and quickly run to Jesse and ask if he could make it. So, I guess I'm not always the one DIY-ing, but I always do my best to help. :) And, I'd much rather have something handmade from my man than store bought any day.

I've got quite the list of DIY projects I'd like to try. Here are some we've completed and some I have yet to start.

Jesse made this adorable box table that sits perfectly just inside our front door. It is inspired by this old door box table.

I'm so excited to share with you the details from our engagement...

Monday night Jesse and I were sitting in our living room, working on his website and chatting. When I was finished working online I put my computer down and Jesse said he made me something. One by one, he handed me these photobooth photo strips:

When he gave me the first one, I wasn't too surprised as he's done sweet things like that before. But, they kept coming and I think I sort of forgot to read them and just kept taking the next one cause I realized what was happening! It was such a perfect moment, no distractions, just the two of us.

My ring is beautiful and I am most definitely the luckiest girl.

Weekend Getaway 7.30

Friday night we headed out to camp with Jesse's family. We had a blast hanging by the campfire, playing games and swimming. It's always nice to get out of town and relax for a few days.

I did go to a hot springs, but wasn't able to take photos since it was in the middle of the night. I highly recommend you going to one if you have not been before.

We're planning to make our decorative pillows soon. We have the fabric and the inner pillows, so we just need to take a few hours to finish that project. Surprisingly, I have no idea how to sew, but Jesse does so we're in luck! :)

This weekend we're going camping at a lake and I am determined to go wakeboarding so I can cross that off my list.

I'm loving having a little list of goals. I need to do this more often!

Sneak Peak

We've been in our new place for about 3 weeks now and I can't believe how much has gotten done. It's so fun to be able to fix up an old house and make it just how we want. I'm not ready to show you pictures of the whole place just yet, but Jesse just finished making us a sign for our wall that I've been dying to show you.

We used this statement sign as our inspiration and found a quote that we both liked. Jesse sanded the board and laid out all the letters. He sprayed painted it and I helped him remove the letters. :) I just love it.

Summer Cocktails

The other day I was telling a friend about one of my favorite drinks, a Russian Squeeze. It was first made for me at Rennie's, a bar I used to frequent when I was in college. The recipe used to be on the bottle of Stoli Blueberi, and unfortunately it's not on the Stoli website either. But, I wanted to share my version of the recipe. I'm sure it's not exact, but darn near close and believe me it's tasty!

Russian Squeeze Kendra Style

1 part Stoli Blueberi

1 part Stoli Peachik

2 parts orange juice

Splash of Sprite

Enjoy!

Just for kicks, here are a couple other drinks that look just as delicious.

Stoli Blueberi Fields
4 parts Stoli Blueberi
2 parts cucumber-infused gin
1 part fresh-squeezed lemon juice
4 mint leaves
Blueberries (muddled)
1/2 part simple syrup or agave nectar
4 mint sprigs

Stoli White Pom Mojito
1 ½ parts Stoli White Pomegranik
¾ part fresh lime juice
¾ part simple syrup
6 mint leaves

Levi's Workshops

Have you heard about the workshops that Levi's is hosting during July and August? Located in the Mission District in San Francisco they've opened up a community print shop where they will be teaching classes on classic letterpress machinery, screenprinting designs, setting type and more. Awesome!

We Did It!

On Sunday morning I was up bright and early to run the Butte to Butte with Renee (Jesse's mom) and my sister, Jenae. My First Summer Goal

Awhile back I made a list of things that I'd like to do this summer and one of those was to run a race. Today I registered myself and my older sister for a 10k held here in Eugene on the 4th of July, the Butte to Butte! I'm a little nervous that it's only a month away, but I know that it's a good challenge for me and a great way to stay motivated. Hopefully I can report that I finished without too much trouble and I can't wait to cross more things off my list!

We could probably go out to dinner at any restaurant in town wearing jeans and a t-shirt and no one would think twice. Craving Lavender Lemonade

Even though it's raining today and there is no sign of the sun, all I want to do is sit outside and sip some lavender lemonade. Doesn't it look tasty? Here's the recipe:

3 cups granulated sugar
3 cups water
1/4 cup dried lavender
4 cups fresh lemon juice (from 16 to 20 lemons)
Ice, for serving
Lemon slices and fresh lavender sprigs, for garnish

Bring sugar and water to a boil in a saucepan, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Stir in lavender. Remove from heat, and let stand for 10 minutes. Strain, discarding lavender. Let cool. Stir in lemon juice. (Lemonade can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 1 week.) Serve over ice, and garnish with lemon slices and fresh lavender sprigs. Makes 12 servings.

Long, 3 day weekends no longer have the same meaning to me. It's sad, but true. I primarily work from home, so I have the freedom to work when I want, but that also means I usually work on the weekends as well. So, while the majority of people I know were enjoying a responsibility-free Monday I was not. And, to top it all off it was gloomy and overcast.

I've been sort of in and out of the blogosphere this week and I blame the weather. I haven't really been able to focus on anything and I'm so glad the weekend is just a day away! I do have some exciting news to share. I may have mentioned this in the past, but right now I am living at home with my mom, stepdad and two young step brothers. Not ideal in any way, but it's a sacrifice I made to move back to Oregon. For quite some time, Jesse and I have been trying to get our own place again and it just hasn't worked out... until now! We are hoping to rent an adorable little house starting in about a month. It really is teeny tiny, but perfect for us, especially after our mini apartment in Berkeley. I hope it all works out and can't wait to show you pictures!

Oh Summer Where Art Thou?

I try really hard not to complain about all the rain in Oregon. Afterall, I have chosen to live here. But, all this rain is really starting to get to me. It's nearly June and we haven't had more than 2 days of sunshine in months! I want to put away my jackets and sweaters and bask in the warm sunshine, not be bundled up inside all day.

I am obsessed with long, beach wavy hair. I've actually been growing my hair out for over a year now just so that I can perfect this look. Kidding, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but really I do love this hairstyle. I stumbled upon this DIY Sexy Beach Hair post and thought perhaps some of you might like to try out this look as well.

I used to have the John Freida Beach Blonde spray and was heart broken when they discontinued it. Since then I've been using Bumble & Bumble's Surf Spray and have also tried Sedu Beach Beauty Sea Salt Spray. Thinking I might try out the Fekkai Summer Hair Beach Waves Spray just to see how it compares.

Anyway, I would love to know if you have any tricks or tips for creating a cute, undone look!

Designer Love Mara Hoffman

I've been a fan of Mara Hoffman for awhile now. I can't remember when I first saw her designs, but I have a hunch it was either on Keeping Up With the Kardashians or The City (don't judge). Regardless, I fell in love with her swimwear immediately. Her designs, which include dresses and swimwear, have a sophisticated beachy/bohemian vibe that I absolutely love.

Wine Tasting in Walla Walla

My trip to Walla Walla was such a good time! I went with two of my best girlfriends from high school, it was so great to see them since we're all in different places now. I'd never been wine tasting before so I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was so fun. On Saturday we went to about 10 different wineries and I don't even think that is nearly half of the wineries in the area! Each winery was different and unique. Some tasting rooms were very casual and others much fancier. Overall I had a fabulous time and would highly recommend the Walla Walla Valley for a wine tasting weekend! And, yes we did meet Kyle MacLachlan. :)

It's all about Anthropologie's buyer-at-large, Keith Johnson, as he travels all over the world looking for one of a kind home furnishings and accessories. The show documents the process that Keith goes through in searching for handcrafted goods, as well as details about the artists. Summer To Do List

I was inspired by Emily's (aka dirty blonde) Summer List of 20 Things To Do and decided to create my own list of things that I'd like to do this summer. It is my favorite time of year and we're so close I can taste it! I truly hope I can do all of the things listed below so I can tell you all about it.

1. Run in a race.

2. Go camping at the beach.

3. Buy an old, used bike and fix it up.

4. Go wakeboarding. I always decline when I'm out at the lake with Jesse's parents and I'm determined to go this summer.

5. Climb a mountain. I'm thinking Mt. Washington or one of the Three Sisters?

6. Make a pillow. I know eventually Jesse and I will have our own place again and in anticipation of that, I'm going to try and make some decorative throw pillows.

7. Visit San Francisco.

8. Go to at least 3 concerts. I've already got Band of Horses and Michael Franti & Spearhead on my mind.

9. Go to a hot spring. I've lived in Oregon for most of my life and never been!

10. Make a meal with ingredients only from the Farmer's Market.

11. Try a VooDoo Doughnut.

12. Try at least 5 new restaurants. There are still a lot of places I haven't tried in Eugene and I know if I spend time in Portland this will be no problem!

13. Go to The Academy of Sciences Nightlife.

14. See The Lion King.

15. Go to the Portland Saturday Market.

16 & 17. Visit McMenamins Kennedy School and Edgefield.

18. Fill my coin jar.

19. Make iced tea.

20. Name my blog!

Birthday Weekend Getaway 4.16

Well, we had a blast camping! Jesse and I left Friday morning and went back to the same spot in Sisters where we climbed not too long ago. We set up camp, climbed a bit and just relaxed. It couldn't have been more perfect... except for the fact that we hardly slept cause we were so cold. Next time we won't forget our blankets!

I have a feeling this weekend was just a taste of what summer will be like, I can't wait for more camping trips and adventures.

I've never been a dedicated follower of Grey's Anatomy, but while visiting my sister in Portland this week I've watched a few episodes with her. In the particular episodes that we were watching, Izzie was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. I got chills as I was watching Izzie face cancer and the reactions of those around her. At one point, an older woman said something like, "having people is better than no people... they always come to be with me." Just before she was going in for surgery, Alex rushed in to see her.

This made me think back to when I was being treated for metastatic melanoma. I feel so lucky that my family was so supportive and always willing to go to appointments with me, so I wasn't alone. When I started treatment, my brother took me to every appointment in the mornings and when he had to leave for school my mom would come to get me on her lunch break and stay with me until I could go home. I was hardly ever at the treatment appointments by myself and can't imagine what I would have done without my family there. Thankfully, it's been a few years since I've had to deal with treatments and numerous appointments, but I know that if I'm ever faced with this disease again I will have all the love and support I need!

Weekend Fun 4.10

This weekend I didn't do much relaxing, but amongst all the work I did manage to check out the Mayer Hawthorne and Passion Pit concert Saturday night, which was awesome. I'm a newer fan to both artists, so I didn't know all the songs but it was still a good time - minus all the scene kids tripping out on the dance floor. I managed to snap a few photos to share with you...

This is Mayer Hawthorne. All the band members had matching suits on, they looked quite handsome. After their set, Mayer was hanging out at his merch table after the show and I'm a little bummed I didn't say hello. Perhaps next time.

Passion Pit

Passion Pit crowd reminded me of the crowd at a Steve Aoki concert Jesse and I saw last summer. Wild.

Oh, I'm just loving the inspiration boards at A Thing For. Once Wed wasn't kidding, they are absolutely gorgeous! The images have a very raw, organic feel that is so enchanting. I have a feeling I could get lost in this blog for hours.
